With today being the 130th Labor Day in the United States of America, I decided that it would be fitting to blog about my Uncle Amedeo Molfesi who despite hardships; endured, progressed and flourishes more than anyone else that I know (besides my mom, his sister, she is also really awesome.)
Ever since my Auntie Christine (my Uncle's fiance) opened a candy store in Block Island, R.I. in 1998, I have been intrigued by the business world and more so in my college years, the marketing world.
I was overjoyed when my uncle asked ME to draw a logo for this brand new store. Being a 8 year old "art fanatic" who loved to draw, paint, sculpt and literally danced for joy for hours when my mom told me that I would be able to attend the 1995 summer art program at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), I was very excited and impressed that I would be given the important task of creating a logo for this new store.
After a few hours of drawing, erasing, drawing, erasing, some more drawing, a lot more erasing and again more drawing, I had the finished product! Below is the logo for Chapel Sweets (which I recently vectorized in PhotoShop for the use of the awesome website: www.chapelsweets.com )
I remember being so proud of myself and happy to have been able to help with the new logo. I am still as proud today to see it being used on the signs, advertising, website, candy and memorabilia.
My family has always supported me and my goals. I was always encouraged to be creative, learn, work hard, stick to my goals and remember to always make time to enjoy life too.
The United States Department of Labor states on its website that "Labor
Day...is a creation of the labor
movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country."
On this Labor Day, I want to thank you, Uncle for being such an amazing role model. You've taught me that if I work hard, believe in myself and utilize the creativity inside me, I will be able to reach my goals.
